Jiken Uematsu was born in 1750 in Nagano, Japan.
Jiken Uematsu disliked agriculture and moved to Tokyo where he kept a bookshop and became a disciple of Doji Nakazawa, master of Shingaku. After the death of his master he took over the school and made several tours of the provinces preaching Shingaku and inspiring large number of people.
