Joan Holub was born in 1956 in Texas, United States, into the family of an engineer and an attorney.
Holub graduated from the University of Texas with a fine arts degree.
Joan Holub left a perfectly good job she’d had for nine years as a librarian and editor, her home, and family behind and moved to New York because she wanted to work in the children’s book field. When Joan looks back on it, she can hardly believe she had the guts to make the move. She had been happy working at her job as an art director at a graphic design firm in Texas, but after the move Joan was ecstatic to be working with children’s books in New York. Both the city and the work were exciting.
Before long, Holub began illustrating full time. At the same time, she was writing manuscripts. Her writing began to improve when she began reading lots of children’s books. Previously, she’d primarily been interested in the art in children’s books. But now Joan began reading them, too. This sounds basic, but it helped her tremendously. She found out what kids are reading today. And she found out what subjects and age groups interested her. So far, she's sold seven books: easy readers, novelty books, and chapter books. Joan has about a dozen other manuscripts circulating. Many people dream of writing and illustrating children's books, so there’s a lot of talent and competition in this field. She thinks that the reason she's got published is that she has lots of determination and energy. And she doesn’t have trouble making herself sit down and work.
Holub sometimes begin a book with a title. That may be a result of having worked in design/advertising where she watched the copywriters come up with catchy product names or ad headlines. Holub keeps thinking about it until a story begins to form. Then she sits down and writes. She usually has several stories in progress at once. That way, if one story stumps her momentarily, Joan can move on to another one for a while. Once she really gets a clear vision of the storyline, though. She's reluctant to stop working on it. Some of her books that began with a title are "Boo Who?", "Ivy Green", "Cootie Queen", and "Red, Yellow, Green: What Do Signs Mean?"
She's developed three illustration styles in response to specific books that she's worked on. Joan calls them her "100th Day" (pencil and watercolor). "Sign language" (ink and watercolor), and "Sleepover" (gouache) styles, based on the first or more well-known books she's illustrated in each style.
Author and illustrator Joan Holub is both prolific and multi-talented. Her numerous credits include fiction and nonfiction, as an author, an illustrator, or sometimes both. Joan is greatly famous as a NY Times bestselling children's book author, with books starring goddessgirls, poodles, a superhero zero, or even a red pencil, in stories about friendship, girl-power, mythology, and other universally important stuff.
