My friends Bill Wagner, Jim "Rip" Morrison, and I were unloading tuna boats in the summer of 1973 in Astoria, Oregon. We worked side by side and would often talk about doing a cross country bicycle trip, but I don't think any of us actually believed that it would happen. Two years later in 1975, Bill contacted "Bikecentennial 76", a group of bicycle enthusiasts in Missoula, Montana. They were willing to give us their cross country bike maps in exchange for riding their route and phoning back information along the way. It was then we all decided to do the trip.

(I'm in awe of the churches and cathedrals in Italy. It am...)
I'm in awe of the churches and cathedrals in Italy. It amazes me how much time, effort and money is spent to maintain them, and how it's a never ending process of regeneration. I'm drawn to these spaces like an artist is drawn to a studio. They are usually quiet, majestic places filled with sculpture, paintings, and other religious iconography. I rarely pass up a chance to enter a church, sometimes out of curiosity, and sometimes just to soften the noise of the outside world, but mostly to make photographs. Photographs in this book are 360 degrees.

I came back to live in Pittsburgh in 1976. I could see the city was changing and evolving into what would ultimately be called a "Renaissance", and I wanted to make a photographic document of this change. In 1980 I received a National Endowment for the Arts survey grant to photograph this evolutionary process, so I picked up my 8x10 Deardorff camera and started the "Pittsburgh Project".

I would like to dedicate this book to my professor, mentor and friend Bernie Freemesser. His untimely death in 1977 brought an end to a photography program that was unique, and one that gave me a vision and a foundation to build a lifetime of experiences in teaching and my personal work in photography.

(Italy: new / perspectives - Large format panoramic photog...)
Italy: new / perspectives - Large format panoramic photographs (360˚) taken in Italy from 2000 to 2007. These photographs are a different way of seeing "places of destination" while traveling in Italy. The work conveys a feeling of being there, and at the same time skews and distorts normal perception of subject matter. Closure is an inherent part of the process of making the work complete, and this, coupled with past visual experiences, gives the viewer a subjective rather than an objective point of view.

Eight is a collection of prints taken from a portfolio of twenty-four inch "kwik print" monoprints made in 1975. The process itself was one of addition and subtraction of photo-sensitive colored pigment on vinyl, similar to bi-chromate prints done at the turn of the century, but much more forgiving in their latitude and longevity. I used the circle image because of its visual stability and strength and because it is a constant reminder of the female form. The women's liberation movement of the 60's and 70's was still echoing in my mind at the time, and I wanted to make a statement about how I felt about these women in particular and women in general.

(On a warm, Fall day my wife Amanda and I and our friends ...)
On a warm, Fall day my wife Amanda and I and our friends Rachel and Nabs from Oxford, England embarked on a beautiful and informative boat ride on the Chicago River. We started from the mouth of the river near Lake Michigan and traveled up and down the north and south branch to see the incredible architecture of the city of Chicago. This photographic book is a result of our little adventure.

"feng shui |ˈfə ng ˈ sh wē; - sh wā| noun (in Chinese thought) a system of laws considered to govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (qi), and whose favorable or unfavorable effects are taken into account when siting and designing buildings." The photographs in this book are my way of seeing and arranging the spatial relationships in these buildings and their environs.
