Stuart Woolf received Bachelor of Arts at Merton College/Oxford University in 1956. Then he studied at Oxford University, where he got Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1960. After that he earned Doctor of Philosophy (by incorporation) at Cambridge University in 1961, and Doctor of Letters at Oxford University in 1991.
Stuart J. Woolf is professor emeritus of contemporary history at the "Ca 'Foscari" University of Venice, where he taught from 1996 to 2006. He has taught in several English universities, Spanish and Australians, as well as, before arriving in Venice, at the European University Institute of Fiesole and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris.
In the context of his research addresses, which focus in particular on political and social history in modern and contemporary times, he has published numerous essays.
Among the volumes edited by Woolf, in addition to the one published in 1974 on reconstruction in Italy, the 1984 works on fascism and on nationalism in Europe, in 2002 on the nineteenth and XX century, for the Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia, and of 2007, for Il Mulino, on the Republican Italy.
Stuart is married to Anna Debenedetti, with whom he has a common daughter.
