John Currey, American lawyer.

Background

Currey, John was born on October 4, 1814 in in Westchester Company, New York, United States. Son of Thomas and Rebecca (Ward) Currey.

Education

Educated academics and Wesleyan University. Studied law in office of Honorary William Nelson, Peekskill, New York, 1839-1842. Admitted to New York bar, 1842.

(Doctor of Laws, Williams College, 1870).

Career

Practiced law Peekskill, 1842-1847, Kingston, New York, 1847-1849. Went to California, 1849. Practiced law in San Francisco.

Was Whig while that party existed, then joined antislavery wing of Democratic party and was its candidate for government of California, 1859. Elected judge Supreme Court, California, 1863. Served 1 term; retired from practice for a few years because of partial loss of eyesight, but resumed after sight was sufficiently restored.
