Havens began his career as a trader of convertible securities at Kidder Peabody Group, Inc. in 1979. Seven years later he joined Morgan Stanley as a principal in institutional equity. Then in 1990, John became a managing director of Morgan Stanley & Co. Inc. Also he served as Global Head of institutional equity division at Morgan Stanley from 2000 to 2005. In 2003, Havens was appointed a director of the Nasdaq OMX Group, Inc.
In 2005, John held a position of a founding partner at Old Lane, LP. Two years later he became Chief Executive Officer at Citi Alternative Investments, Inc. (nowadays Citigroup Alternative Investments, LLC). In 2008, Havens took a position of a chairman of the board of Alternative Investments, LLC. Then in 2009, he became Head of Global Institutional Bank at Citigroup, Inc., here he worked until 2011.
In addition, John worked as Chief Executive Officer of Institutional Client Group at Citi Cards N.A. from 2008 to 2011. In 2011, he became President and Chief Operating Officer of Citigroup Inc. and held the position for a year.
In 2014, Havens was appointed as the non-executive chairman of Napier Park Global Capital, a spin-off firm of Citigroup. On February 22, 2019 Bloomberg News named John Havens as one of those caught up in a prostitution probe in Palm Beach County.
