In addition to lecturing on chemistry, Mayall ran a daguerreotype studio with Marcus A. Root in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, from 1842 to 1846. He moved to London, United Kingdom shortly thereafter, first managing the studio of Antoine Claudet. In April 1847, he opened the American Daguerreotype Institution, later opened an additional studio in Brighton, Sussex.
A daguerreotypist, Mayall managed to make his portrait studio one of the most successful, on a commercial basis, in London, United Kingdom. He produced many albumen prints which were the basis for engravings appearing in Illustrated Times and Illustrated London News, a series illustrating the Lord's Prayer, and a large-format collection for the Great Exhibition of 1851. From his studio he produced mainly cartes de visite and cabinet portraits.
