John Nesbitt was born on December 14, 1948 in Lompoc, California, United States, in the family of Alexander Dunville and Elizabeth Margaret Nesbitt.
John received Bachelor Degree at University California, Los Angeles, in 1971, then Master of Arts at University California, Davis, in 1974. He became Doctor of Philosophy at University California, Davis, in 1980.
Since 1981 John serves as an Instructor at Eastern Wyoming College, Torrington.
John has won many awards for his work, including two awards from the Wyoming State Historical Society (for fiction), two awards from Wyoming Writers for encouragement of other writers and service to the organization, two Wyoming Arts Council literary fellowships, a Will Rogers Medallion Award for Dark Prairie and another for Thorns on the Rose, a Western Writers of America Spur finalist award for his novel Raven Springs, and the Spur award itself for his short story “At the End of the Orchard” and for his novels Trouble at the Redstone and Stranger in Thunder Basin.

John married Laura Margaret Stokes on September 17, 1977, but they divorced on February 14, 1983. Then he married Liesa Ann Jensen on January 4, 1988, but they broke up on August 3, 1990. On June 21, 1995 he married Rocio Perez. He has one son Dimitri Andres.
