John Pflum studied at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956 and a Master of Education in 1962. He also did further graduate study at the University of Pittsburgh from 1963 to 1965.
John Pflum started his career as an elementary school teacher and principal in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania from 1962 to 1965. In 1965, he took up a post of a professor of education at Millersville University and held this post until 1991. Pflum also worked as a director and teacher at the Jenkins School.
John Pflum wrote his first book Open Education: For Me? in 1974. He also published The New Open Education: A Program for Combining the Basics with Alternative Methods in 1975.
