John V. Punter

Background

John Punter was born in December 1945.

Education

John Punter graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1967. He also attended the University of Toronto in 1967-1974, where he received a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy.

Career

John Punter served as a professor of urban studies at York University in 1972-1975. Then he held the position of professor of land management and development at the University of Reading from 1975 to 1993. In 1993 he became a professor of environmental planning at Strathclyde University, and also, he was a head of the department of environmental planning. Additionally, Punter is a consultant for various groups, including the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Reading Borough Council, Urban Cultures, Hillier Parker, David Lock Associates, and the Welsh Development Agency. In 1996 he was a panel member and a panel chair in 2001 of the Research Assessment Exercise Panel for Town and Country Planning. Since 1996, John Punter serves as a professor of urban design at Cardiff University.

Besides, John Punter is a writer. He is a contributor of articles to scholarly journals, including Urban Studies, Urban Design International, Built Environment, Town Planning Review, Journal of Urban Design, and Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. Punter's books, including Design Guidelines in American Cities: A Review of Design Policies and Guidance in Five West Coast Cities and The Vancouver Achievement 1970-2000: Discretionary Zoning, Planning, and Urban Design, examine urban planning practices in various cities in an attempt to illustrate examples of the most effective way to design modern cities.

In Design Guidelines in American Cities, Punter looks at the urban planning process of Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Irvine, and San Diego. Every chapter reviews a particular city's development, design, and a clear and direct sense of the issues which each city addresses, including "substantial extracts" of original planning documents. It also shows the design policy response. Punter's book, The Vancouver Achievement 1970-2000, is a case study of the urban planning of the Canadian city of Vancouver, in British Columbia. The author traces its development and attempts to explain why Vancouver is often referred to as an example of success in urban design.
