John Ward received a Bachelor of Arts in Music (1960) from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, a Master of Arts in Art History (1962) from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting (1964) from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. In 1980 he was a Doctor of Philosophy candidate at Boston University.
