Taught, Stanstead, Canada, 1846-1849. Tutor U. Vermont, 1849-1850. Moved to Chicago, 1853, partner with H.N. Hibbard, firm moved to Freeport, Illinois, 1853.
Reestablished law firm, Chicago, 1856-1865.
Judge Chicago Superior Court, 1865-1883, most famous case was Samuel Chase et al versus Charles East. Cheney (58 Illinois, 509), reversed by Illinois Supreme Court. Professor equity and constitutional law University of Chicago, 1867-1868.
Resumed law practice, 1883. Elected president Hyde Park (Illinois) Board Trustees, 1888.
