Turnbull, John Gordon was born on November 8, 1891 in San Francisco, California, United States. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Noakes) Turnbull.

Draftsman, San Francisco, 1911-1913. Engineer, Portland, Oregon, 1913-1915. Partner W. A. Kramer Company, Portland, and co-adventurer Hans Pederson Company, Seattle, constitution Nisqually Dam, Tacoma Power Plant and transmission lines, Lake Washington Canal Locks, 1915-1917.

Consultant architectural, industrial engineer for Ford, G.M., Paige, Dodge, Hudson & Packard Motor companies, Curtis-Wright, Chance-Vought Airplane companies, Pratt-Whitney Engine Company, and others, 1918-1937. Construction engineering G.M. Corporation (Detroit Diesel, Allison Engine, Electro-Motive plants), 1938-1941. President, Chairman of the Board, chief consultant J. Gordon Turnbull, Inc., since 1941, designing and supervising construction synthetic rubber plants including, Rubber Res Corporation.

Tire plants including, Goodyear, United States Rubber, Kelly Springfield. Aircraft plants including, N.A. Aviation, Lockheed, Goodyear). Aluminum reduction and extrusion plants including, Reynolds Metals Company.

Defense installations including, Canol Project comprising airfields, highways, pipelines, refineries and dockage: airfields at Ferry Island Groups, Honolulu to New Guinea. Master plans United States Air Force bases, United States of America, England, and Japan. And other engineering projects for United States C.E., Atomic Energy Commission, Air Force.

Headed special engineering mission to Europe for United States State Department, Army, Navy and Air Force, 1948.
