Joji Sakurai was born in 1858 in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan. The third son of Jintaro Sakurai, an ex-retainer of Kanazawa Clan.

After studying chemistry at Kaisei School was sent by the Ministry of Education to London University for further studies.
Returning home after five years with high scholastic marks was appointed professor at Tokyo University (1882). Here he lifted the teaching of chemistry to the level of those in Europe and America.
Was elected member of Imperial Academy (1898), then to the House of Peers (1920). President of Imperial Academy (1926). Made many trips to Europe and America for studies.
