Jose Malhoa studied at the University of Lisbon, at the Faculty of Fine Arts.
After being refused a scholarship, which gave the right to travel abroad, Jose got disappointed and decided to permanently cease painting. He started to work as a salesman in his brother's shop. After six months of work, however, Malhoa started to paint again.
In 1881, the painter left his brother's shop and devoted all his time to painting. Some time later, he was commissioned to paint the ceiling of the main hall of the Lisbon Royal Conservatory.
He took part in different exhibitions, both in Portugal and abroad, including Berlin, St. Petersburg, Liverpool and Rio de Janeiro.
