Julio Resende was born on October 23, 1917 in Porto, Portugal.
In 1945, Julio graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Porto, where he studied under Dordio Gomes. During the period from 1947-1948, he studied fresco and engraving techniques at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
The painter also attended Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where Othon Fries was his teacher.
Since 1930 to 1936, Julio Resende made illustrations and cartoons for newspapers and children’s publications. In 1946, Resende held his first exhibition in Lisbon.
In 1949, the painter started to work as a teacher of ceramics in a small school in Viana do Alentejo. During this period, he established contact with the writer Virgilio Ferreira.
In 1951, Julio moved to Porto and worked as a secondary school teacher. The following year, he painted the fresco at the Gomes Teixeira School in Porto. In 1954, Julio left for Póvoa de Varzim, where he also held the position of a teacher at a secondary school.
Some time later, in 1962, the painter applied to join the teaching staff of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, a position he held until 1987.
In 1965, Resende designed the sets and costumes for "Auto da India" by Gil Vicente, directed by Carlos Avilez for Teatro Experimental do Porto.
In 1968, he Illustrated "Aparicao" by Virgilio Ferreira. The same year, Julio designed the sets and costumes for the ballet "Judas", choreographed by Agueda Sena and the Company of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon.
In 1971, he made his first journey to Brazil, where he met Jorge Amado and Mario Cravo Filho. Ten years later, he worked on stained glass windows for Our Lady of Boavista Church in Porto.
In 1989, Resende held his retrospective exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
Since 1994 to 1995, the painter worked on ceramic panels for the Sete Rios Metro Stration in Lisbon. The following year, he traveled to Goa.
In 2001, another Julio's retrospective exhibition took place at Galeria Nave dos Paços do Concelho in Matosinhos.

Julio Resende was married to Maria Zita Leao. In 2009, the couple divorced.
