Josef Albert was born on March 5, 1825 in Munich, Bayern, Germany.
Josef Albert studied architecture until he learned of Daguerre's discovery, then pursued daguerreotypy under the instruction of Munich photographer Loccherer.
In 1850 Josef Albert opened his own portrait business in Augsburg. Eight years later he returned to Munich, where he became involved in the photographic reproduction of drawings and copperplate engravings, reproducing facsimiles of the work of German artists plus illustrations for scientific subjects.
In 1868 the inventor introduced Albertype - a glass support for collotype printing to which an undercoating fastened the relief emulsion. The process gave commercial viability to Poitevin's discovery, enabling the making of 1,000 or more copies from one plate. In 1873 Albert began operating a special high-speed press for collotype printing, and in 1876 he introduced color collotype.
