Attending surgeon, Washington, District of Columbia, 1862. Appointed surgeon-general, chief Medical Department, United States Army, 1864. Attended deathbed of President Lincoln, personal physician to Secretary of State William H. Seward after attempted assassination, attended President James Garfield after he was shot.
