Byron, Joseph Wilson was born on June 3, 1892 in Fort Meade, South Dakota, United States. Son of Joseph Charles and Jane Frances (Wilson) Byron.

Student Phillips Exeter Academy, 1909-1910. Bachelor of Science, United States Military Academy, 1914.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant, United States Army, and served, 1914-1919. With W. D. Byron & Sons, tanners, Williamsport, Maryland., 1919-1942, as assistant treasurer, 1922-1924, vice-president and general manager, 1924-1928, president, 1928-1942. Vice president, chairman of the executive committee Hagerstown Shoe & Legging Company.

Resigned to re-enter the Army. Was chief Army Exchange Service. Major general director, Special Services Division.

Inactive duty, June 23, 1946. Recommd. major general O.R.C., February 27, 1947. President First Federal Savings & Loan Association Industry advisor, National Basketball Association, 1933.

Section chief (dollar-a-year man), Office Production Management and War Production Board, 1941-1942. Trustee Young Men’s Christian Association. Director president Public Health Association.

Vice president Boy Scout Council (Silver Beaver award). Past president Hagerstown Rotary Club.
