Hanzawa graduated from Sapporo Agricultural School in 1901.
Hanzawa Jun served as assistant professor and then professor of Tohoku University; also at Agriculural Department of Hokkaido University. He studied in America, France and Germany. Rendered research on yeast for butter and fermented soybeans. In 1919 Dr. Jun Hanzawa published the first of three key report which helped to bring natto production in Japan out of the «Dark Ages». Serving as microbiologist and pilot plant operator he made pure-culture bacterial inoculum for natto. In 1971 he was given the honor of addressing the emperor of Japan on the subject of natto. On retirement appointed emeritus professor of the university. One of his books is «Microbe».
