Kagekado Kato served Yoritomo and distinguished himself during the Battle of Ishibashiyama and during the civil war against Heike family (1187). It is said that prior to the latter engagement he was seriously ill but insisted on accompanying the troops of Noriyori Minamoto to battle. For this act of valor Yoritomo presented him a costly horse. After the assassination of Shogun Sanetorao Minamoto he became a priest under the name of Ka-kurembo.
