Karl received Bachelor of Arts at the American University in 1962. Then he studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where he got Master of Arts in 1965.

Karl F. Cohen teaches animation history classes at San Francisco State University and is also an independent film distributor. He is also a contributor of several hundred articles to magazines, including Film/Tape World, Animation World, and Animato.
