Katanaga Kinoshita was the first student to be sent to Vladivostok for studies by the General Staff of the Army (1880). While there he learnt Russian and made a detailed study of Siberia and chartered a map of the area for use by the Array.
Later, when the Sino-Japanese Trade Research Institute was established at Shanghai Katanaga Kinoshita was appointed a member of its teaching staff (1890). During the SinoJapanese (1894-1895) and Russo-Japanese wars (1904-1905) he acted as an interpreter for the Army. At the end of war he set himself up in business at Dairen, but later served at the Government-General of Korea and spent the rest of his life to the study of Far Eastern problems.
