Katei Watanabe began his career as a journalist on the staff of a newspaper in Tokyo. Meantime wrote novels and came into prominence with his books O-koma and Ukigumo ( A Drifting Cloud). He caught the attention of Ryuhei Murayama, who persuaded him to join the Asahi Shimbun as chief of the newspaper's social section. Wrote more than a thousand fictions, mostly biographical stories of great men.
