Hauke was born on August 27, 1935 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States; the daughter of Robert J. Armstrong and Katherine E. (Gall) Armstrong.
Hauke received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Michigan in 1958. Four years later she earned his Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Rhode Island. Also Kathleen was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in English from the same university in 1981.
Hauke began his career as a teaching assistant at English University of Rhode Island in 1976 and held it for five years. Then in 1984, she took a position of an instructor at Hopkinsville Community College. Two years later Kathleen became an assistant professor at Morris Brown College, where she worked until 1991. From 1994 she was a lecturer at Spelman College.
She held a position of a visiting professor at Emory University in 1985 and a visiting lecturer at the University of Nairobi in 1988-1989. Also Hauke was a part-time instructor at Georgia State University. In addition to her teaching career, she wrote three books on Ted Poston. At the time of her death Kathleen was working on a biography of South African playwright Richard Rive.
Hauke was a member of Modern Language Association, College of Language Association and Langston Hughes Society.
On September 20, 1958 Kathleen Hauke married Richard L. Hauke. The marriage produced two daughters and two sons.
