Vought received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Skidmore College in 1974. Founded in 1903 as the Young Women's Industrial Club, Skidmore developed into a four-year liberal-arts college in 1922 and became coeducational in 1971, shortly before Vought completed her studies.
Vought began her publishing career as a proofreader at Data Communications in Parsippany, New Jersey, in 1975. Data Communications was part of the period's expanding professional and trade publishing environment, in which specialized magazines served rapidly developing business and technological fields.
In 1976 she joined Avon Books in New York City as an editorial assistant, serving in that position through 1977. Avon Books, founded in 1941 as an American mass-market publisher, became particularly prominent in commercial paperback publishing and popular fiction during the postwar decades.
Vought advanced to associate editor at Avon Books from 1977 to 1980 and became managing editor in 1981. Her progression followed the editorial path from manuscript and production support toward broader responsibility within a major commercial publishing house.
Vought was a member of the National Organization for Women, a United States women's-rights organization founded in 1966 to advocate for gender equality. She also belonged to the Glenburnie Cottager's Association, serving as its secretary from 1981, and participated in Mount Lakes Badminton during 1980–1981.
Vought is the daughter of Norman Vought and Harriet (Davison) Vought.
