In 1991, Katie received a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University. Two years later, in 1993, she got a Master of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University. Later, beginning in 2000, she carried out her doctoral study at Mills College.
Katie began her writing career in 1988. During the period from 1993 and 1995, Hern served as a media coordinator for the San Francisco chapter of Lesbian Avengers, a direct action group, focused on issues vital to lesbian survival and visibility.
In 1994, Katie was appointed the director of the Academic Support Center at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, a post she held until 2000. Between 1997 and 2000, Hern served as an adjunct professor of liberal arts at the same university. In 2000, she was promoted to the post of dean of academic affairs there.
