Originally from Wittenberg, Wisconsin, Shankland lives in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Shankland is a community organizer and is involved with renewable energy projects. Shankland graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in political science.
In November 2012, Shankland was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Democrat.
