Kazuo Watanabe graduated from French Literature Department of Tokyo University (1925).
Kazuo Watanabe was appointed professor at Tokyo Higher School (1925). Later studied in France for two years (1931-1933). Upon return rejoined his alma mater as assistant professor (1942). Became professor (1948). Is noted as a scholar of French literature. Made special study of Humanistic Literature of the Period of the Renaissance. His translations of Francois Rabelais' "Gargantua" and "Pantagruel" are considered masterpieces. Other works include "On Madness" and "On The Grammarian's Right to Curse War".
