Taguchi Kazuyoshi was born on November 20, 1839 in Musashino, Tokyo, Japan. His father was Jun-an, a physician.
Taguchi began studying the Japanese and Chinese classics in turn under Issai Sato, Toin Shionoya, Shuntaro Noro, and medicine under Dokai Hayashi and Kando Akazawa.
In 1869 he entered a university to study human anatomy and made a remarkable collection of bone specimens. He helped Matsumoto and Kawamoto in modeling a human skeleton and an ear out of ivory, both of which models drew favorable attention at the Vienna Exhibition.
He went to Europe for higher studies in 1870.
