In 1976 Kevin received Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) at Ball State University, and then Master of Arts there in 1978. After that he studied at Indiana University, where he earned Master of Arts in Creative writing in 1982 and Doctor of Philosophy in American literature in 1984.
Kevin started his career in 1978 as an instructor at Ball State University and took thet post for a year. Then he transfered to Bloomington ans became an associate instructor at Indiana University, and then an assistant professor at Bradley University. From 1988 to 1994 Kevin worked as an associate professor at Bradley University, but since 1994 he was a professor of English there. He stepped down from the position at the end of 2017.
Kevin is also a contributor of essays to periodicals, including American Poetry Review, Concerning Poetry, Indiana Review, Iowa English Journal, and Ohio Review. Stein’s books of poetry include "A Circus of Want", which won the Devins Award; "Bruised Paradise"; "Chance Ransom"; "American Ghost Roses", which won the Society of Midland Authors Poetry Award; and "Sufficiency of the Actual."
On May 26, 1979 Kevin married a registered nurse Debra Lang, with whom he has two children: Kirsten Anne and Joseph Kevin Stein.
