Styling himself Nyudo Bangen, Kian served King Shonei at Loochoo Islands, where he also lectured on the art of making tea. Records show that when the Shimazu Clan, of Kagoshima Prefecture, conquered the islands, Kian pleaded on behalf of the King and persuaded the latter to accompany him to Edo (1609).
