Kiyotsune Taira was born in Japan. He was the son of Shigemori.
Kiyotsune Taira was Lieutenant General of the Left Imperial Guard. After the prestige of the Tairas declined, he boarded a ship from Dazaifu, Kyushu, with Munemori, for Yanagiura, Buzen Province (Oita Prefecture) (1183).
Knowing that his family was destined to final defeat, he played the flute and sang for a whole night abroad the ship and then jumped into the sea.
