Kochu Ueda was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1819. He was the son and pupil of Ueda Kofu.
Kochu Ueda studied painting under his father and later became one of the distinguished pupils of Okyo Maruyama.
After his father's death, in 1832, Kochu Ueda moved to Osaka and became a pupil of Nagayama Kôin. During his career, he traveled a lot. Kochu developed his own painting style. Among his representative works are Setchu-no Matsu (Pine Trees in the Snow) and Takagari (Scenes of Hawking), which he painted at age 92, shortly before his death on the screens of the Kihfnkalu (Reception Hall) in Temma Shrine in Osaka.
