He graduated from the Kostroma Theological School (1806), the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute (1810).
Since 1811 in St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute he taught geography and statistics. A member of the Council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (since 1832), headed the statistical committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (1835-1853).
