Kosaku Ishida was born in 1629. He was a descendant of Prince Kuzuhara. His original name is Heizaburo.

Education
Ishida showed inclination for study at an early age and by the time he was 16 had read almost all the famous Chinese classics and books on Buddhism.
Career
Kosaku Ishida entered the service of Katsushige Nabeshima, and after his master's death served Mitsushige, his successor. Stern and outspoken, he fell foul of the clan lord who exiled him to Yamashiro for eight years (1662). After his exile was lifted he retired to Shimoda, where many disciples came to study under him, including Tsunetomo Yamamoto, the author of Hagakure, a book on Bushido.
