Kounsai Takeda was born in 1803 in Ibaraki, Japan.
When Nariaki Tokugawa was placed under house arrest he tried his best to intercede on his behalf with the result that he too, was given the same punishment.
In 1855 he was pardoned and appointed the clan's chief secretary. In this capacity he played a leading role in clan politics and was active in advocating the Emperor system and the expulsion of foreigners. When Kogoro Fujita rose in revolt against the Shogunate at Mt. Tsukuba (1864), Kounsai at the head of 400 armed men attempted to march into Kyoto through Kisoji, the mountain pass north of Nagoya.
Their march was intercepted and he was placed under arrest and on February 4, 1865 was executed in Tsuruga (Fukui Prefecture).
