Kuki Moritaka was born in 1582. He was the son of Kuki Yoshitake, one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's top generals he succeeded to his family (1599).

Kuki Moritaka entered the service of Ieyasu Tokugawa and distinguished himself during the Sekigahara Battle, for which he was granted an additional fief of 20,000 koku (1600). After the battle, he pleaded for the life of his father, who fought on the opposite side, but while the plea was being granted his father committed suicide. Kuki Moritaka again distinguished himself in the battle against Hideyoshi Toyotomi in Osaka (1614 -1615) as commander of Tokugawa’s fleet.
