Kuzma was born on October 24, 1878 in Khvalynsk in the times of the Russian Empire. He was from a lower middle class.
He graduated from the Moscow School of Arts specializing in Sculpture and Architecture in 1905.
In the summer of 1900, Petrov-Vodkin lived in Polovtsevo village in Novokhopyorsk uyezd, Voronezh Governorate, where he gave painting lessons to a local landowner (Petrov-Vodkin’s book “Letters. Articles. Performances. Documents”, Moscow, 1991).
From a child, he was keen on writing. He published his novels since 1905. In 1906 he became a member of the Union of Playwrights and Musical Writers. He is the author of plays, traveler’s essays, a children's book “Aoya. Andryusha and Kate’s adventures in the air, under and on the ground” (St. Petersburg, 1914), the book “Samarkandia” (Petrograd, 1923), the autobiographical book “My Story ”(Leningrad, 1930, 1932; part 1-2).
He is the author of many paintings; the most well known is “Bathing of the red horse” created in 1912. He created portraits of Anna Andreevna Akhmatova, Andrei Bely, Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy, and other writers.
