Shibata Kyuo was a Shingaku teacher (popular ethics in the Edo Period). He was commonly called Kenzo. Kyuo was his name after he became a Buddhist priest. He was a well-known teller of shingaku down, or ethical stories for the masses. Traveled widely telling his moral stories. Kyuo Dowa is a collection of his stories recorded by Baigan Ishida.
