Lawrence McKay studied at the University of Denver where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. He also attended the American Film Institute and received a Master of Arts degree in 1986.
Lawrence McKay started his career as a writer in 1995 when his first book Caravan was published. In 1998, he published his second book Journey Home. He also worked as an equities trader. He still combines writing and trading. McKay now lives with his wife and children in Vashon Island, Washington.
