Education
Leigh studied applied arts at the Academy of Design in New York City, New York, United States. Also, he did graduate work at the Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
Career
In 1898 Leigh became an instructor at Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia, United States. Later, he served as director of applied art. From 1904 to 1907 he maintained his own studio in New York City, New York, United States.
Leigh worked with glass negatives, superbly executing a compassionate record of the lives of blacks on St. Helena Island.
