Leisa studied Civil Engineering at United States Air Force Academy. After that she received Bachelor of Arts in Women's Studies at University of Colorado at Boulder in 1983. Finally, she earned Doctor of Philosophy in American History (United States) at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993.
Leisa D. Meyer started her career as an assistant manager of McDonald's Corporation in 1982. Then she changed the direction of her career to teaching, and since 1994 she holds the position of an associate Professor and Chair at the College of William and Mary. Her current project is a book on the history of sexuality in the United States since World War II tentatively titled, "Knowing Sex." She was an associate editor for the "Encyclopedia of American Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History & Culture", printed in 2003. Leisa also serves on the editorial advisory board for the journal Minerva, and is an editor for the journal Feminist Studies. She also workes on the advisory board for the Michael D. Palm Center for at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
