1895 graduate Moscow University.
1904-1941 professor, Chair of Botany (later Chair of Plant Anatomy and Physiology), Timber Institute (now Kirov Forestry Academy). 1938-1947 head. Photosynthesis Laboratory, Institute of Plant Physiology, USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1944 simultaneously head, Laboratory of the Physiology and Ecology of Wood Varieties, Institute of Timber, USSR Academy of Sciences.
Did research on the effects of light and moisture on trees. Devised original method of studying photosynthesis. Designed a phytoactinomcter to study photosynthesis and a phytoatmometer to measure evaporation rates, etc.
Established theoretical priciples of tapping conifers. Wrote numerous works on wood anatomy, the taxonomy of lower plants, fermentation, respiration and phosphorus conversion in plants.
