Leonid Timofeev was born on December 23, 1903, in Moscow City, Russian Federation.
In 1922, Leonid Timofeev graduated from the one-year course of the Moscow Institute of Journalism and entered the Higher Literary and Art Institute, graduating in 1925. In 1928, he completed a post-graduate course at the Institute of language and literature.
In 1941-1970, Leonid Timofeev was the head of the department of the Gorky Institute of World Literature.
