Nikolay Nikolaevich graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University (1899). He attended lectures on linguistics at the University of Leipzig (Germany).
At Voronezh State University Nikolay Nikolaevich taught the Old Slavonic language. In 1903 he was appointed as a full-time lecturer of Russian at the Teachers' Institute. Till 1908 he also taught at various secondary schools in Moscow.
Since 1918 Nikolay Nikolaevich was a privat-docent of Moscow University, Yuryev University (now the University of Tartu), and Voronezh State University. In 1922 he returned to Moscow and he taught at various secondary schools in Moscow.
Nikolay Nikolaevich did a lot to study the Lithuanian language. Since his youth, he has shown an active interest in the Baltic traces in his homeland, and in Voronezh, he constantly communicated with the Lithuanian Diaspora.
Nikolay Nikolaevich Sokolov's research activities were mainly focused on the study of comparative linguistics, in particular, the Lithuanian language, and the study of the Russian language, mainly its dialectology; he also studied the Belarusian language.
Nikolay Nikolaevich was married to Anna Paschenko, and they had two sons Nikolay (1915 - ?) and Vladimir (1917 - ?).
