Kuehl was born on August 15, 1931 in Ketchikan, Alaska, United States; the son of Eric O. Kuehl and Marie Anne (Rowald) Kuehl.
Kuehl received a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1953. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree from Oregon State University. Also in 1961, Leroy was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California.
Kuehl began his career as an instructor of biochemistry at the University of Utah in 1965. Two years later he became an assistant professor of biochemistry at the same univesity. Also Leroy served as an associate professor of biochemistry at the University of Utah from 1971 to 1980. Since 1980 he was a professor of biochemistry at that university. Nowadays Kuehl is a professor emeritus at the University of Utah.
Kuehl is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society and American Society of Biological Chemists.
On March 21, 1959 Leroy Kuehl married Barbara Rose Eschmann. They have 3 children.
