Chao Lien-fang graduated from Tsinghua College (now Tsinghua University) in 1921. Then he left for the United States of America for advanced education in the summer of 1922. Mr. Chao received the degree of Bachelor of Science in agronomy from the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts in 1924, Master of Science in 1926. In 1927 Chao Lien-fang obtained Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Breeding from the University of Wisconsin. He carried on reseach project in Plant Breeding at Cornell University between 1927 and 1928.
Mr. Chao returned to China in June, 1928. He served as a professor of Farm Crops at the University of Nanjing in 1928. Later Mr. Chao held the posts of a head of Agronomy Department of the Agricultural Bureau of Guangxi, professor of Plant Breeding and head of the Agronomy Department of the Agricultural College of the National Central University and also senior specialist in Rice Breeding. Concurrently he served on the committee of Agricultural Economics under the National Defence Commission. Chao Lien-fang was a member of the Agricultural Reconstruction Commission of the Executive Yuan. He also took the post of a director of the Agricultural Bureau of the National Economic Council since 1934.
