Lindsay Barrett George was born on July 22, 1952, in Dominican Republic. She is a daughter of Hugh Campbell, a brewmaster, and Beryl Barrett (maiden name Furet), a homemaker.
Lindsay Barrett George revealed her passion for paintings while a young girl. She was introduced to the field by her grandfather.
Fascinated by animals, the little George doodled them everywhere – in the sand, on the walls, and on sheets of paper.
When she was eight years, the family relocated to the United States and settled down in New Jersey. Having Spanish as her first language, George took time to learn English. During this period, she used pictures of her West Indies home to make friends.
From 1972 to 1973, Lindsay Barrett George attended School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (currently School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University). In 1974, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York.
She then pursued her studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She graduated in 1977 with a Master of Fine Arts in drawing and printmaking.
The start of Lindsay Barrett George’s career can be counted from her work as a fine-art printer in publishing house at New York City where had come in 1977. At the beginning of the new decade, she found the job of a mechanical artist in the children’s book division. After serving in that capacity for three years, she and her husband relocated to Pennsylvania.
They lived for a long time in a log cabin on a lake. George enjoyed to spent her time outdoors sketching plants and animals of the local woods. Suddenly, she had an idea to create picture books for children where she could share the drawings.
The first of such books telling the story of a little boy who raised a gosling that had lost her parents, ‘William and Boomer’, appeared in 1987. William, George’s son, was a prototype for the main character.
The following series of Lindsay Barrett George became ‘Long Pond’ books. She co-wrote the first one with her husband, William Trimpi George, and illustrated the next three editions.
The next ‘Who’s Been Here?’ series about the discovering of siblings William and Cammy received considerable recognition for its wonderful illustrations of animals, birds, and fish. The simple, instructive format of the writings was praised by teachers of nature classes.
Since 1989, George has tried her hand as a lecturer and artist in residence at elementary schools.
Nowadays, Lindsay Barrett George collaborates with Virginia Duncan, the Publisher of Greenwillow Books.

Quotations:
"Every little mouse, every dog, every child – everyone has stories to tell. It is fun to be able to help make these stories come to life for a child – in a book."
"I’ve always been a serious 'looker' of things. Although my work has been referred to as photographic, I don’t draw exactly what I see – I draw things the way that I need them to be, for me. The inclination for some artists is sometimes to go far for inspiration. I tend to look no further than the earth beneath my feet or the tree in front of my nose for subjects that matter."
"To show a child some familiar bark, as if for the first time, [or] to have a child feel as though he/she is holding a chipmunk or a squirrel, that’s why I make paintings. And the reason I make books [is that] I love what makes a book ‘work’ – the turning of pages and of images. I enjoy making pictures that will fill a child with a curiosity about the next page or picture."
"The motivation behind the books that I’ve written and illustrated was to create a place for children to ‘go,’ and be shown thing about animals that either they would never see or could never see on their own."
"I am happy and fortunate to be in the company of such wonderful and fine artists and authors that are in the children’s book field. My view of my fellow contemporary children’s bookmakers – Great Stuff! I try not to give advice, but am most willing to pass on some wisdom that has been handed down to me – write the story that only you can write, and make the pictures that show your originality of vision. [...] Drawing has always been a way for me to communicate the pleasure of looking, daydreaming, and simply being here. So, to everyone, DRAW ON!"
"For a little girl whose passion was drawing birds and fish and flowers and trees, to end up as an artist and bookmaker whose passion is drawing birds and fish and flowers and trees… it doesn’t get any better."
Lindsay Barrett George married William Trimpi George on November 1984. The family produced two children named William and Campbell.
George has illustrated several books written by her first husband. He died in 1999.
In 2013, the illustrator married Thane Peterson, a journalist.
