Initially, Lisa apprenticing with Vogue. Later, she worked for several years through the Graphics House agency. As a freelance, she had assignments from New York Times Magazine, Parade, Glamour, Vogue, Charm, and Holiday. Larsen served on the staff of Life from 1949 to 1959.
Also in 1958, the Overseas Press Club of America honored her for best overseas camera reporting. Lisa was fluent in French, English, German and some Danish and Russian, Larsen was the first American photographer in ten years to be admitted. Working with a Leica in color and black-and-white, Larsen produced warm, realistic, sympathetic portraits. Her major interest, though, was traveling to remote regions of the world.
